Before you buy an used car always take it to a reputable mechanic that YOU trust and have him check it over completely. He can alert you to exsisting conditions, safety problems, and possible damage that the seller may be trying to cover up. You should also get a Free Car History report from CarFax.

Under Buying Used Cars: Car FAQ: Car History
There are many sites out there that will offer you a Free Car History Report about your VIN, however, they only really tell you the number of records they have. While the number of records your car has is interesting, you really need to get the full report to determine if you have any issues with your car or not. We recommend running the Free Vin Search to see how many records exist. You can then make the decision if you want to purchase the full report or not.
